AN HOUR LATER, CODY hopped out of the ambulance after the medics wheeled Gabe’s gurney out. He followed the gurney through the emergency room entrance and into the hospital.

He’d done his best to stop Gabe’s bleeding while they waited for the bus. It stubbornly refused to clot.

Gabe’s blood covered large portions of Cody’s shirt. He’d been forced to lift it to his shoulders to prove to the medics he wasn’t injured.

Now, he followed Gabe’s gurney through several sets of entrances and a myriad of interconnecting hallways in the hospital. The medics pushed it through some heavy, swinging doors and into a tiled room full of medical equipment.

A tiny, Polynesian nurse appeared from somewhere and planted herself squarely in front of Cody, putting a hand on his chest. She couldn’t have reached any higher. The top of her head barely brushed his shoulder.

“You can’t go in there. Give them time to work on him.”

Cody sighed. He wanted to go in, of course, but he nodded.

Though he couldn’t see Gabe himself—too many doctors and nurses stood around him, blocking him from Cody’s view—he could still watch them through the plexiglass windows.

“Cody?”

He twisted to find Kyra walking down the hall toward him. Her eyes dropped to his shirt, and her mouth fell open, her expression turning to one of horror.

Cody practically sprinted toward her. “He's okay. He got shot in the shoulder. Yes, this is his blood. They’re working on him, now.”

“Working on him?” If anything, her eyes got wider.

“Yes. Kyra, he's talking. Thinking. I think he’ll be fine. They only need to sew him up.”

Still looking panicked, Kyra scrutinized Cody's face for several seconds before nodding shakily. “Okay.”

The hallway they stood in wasn't exactly a waiting room. Hard chairs lined it in periodic clusters of three.

Cody guided her over to one of them and helped her sit down. “I'm sure the doctors will be out soon to let us know how he's doing.”

Cody had no idea how Gabe fared. He wasn’t a doctor, and bullets were notoriously unpredictable. What seemed a small injury could end up being fatal. And people who sustained injuries doctors swore would be lethal often survived. He prayed the news would be good.

He’d told Kyra the truth, though. Gabe seemed very much himself—aside from the obvious injury—on the ride to the hospital.

Cody explained his history with Resputa again, and Gabe asked intelligent, analytical questions about him.

Cody sat beside Kyra and covered her hands with one of his.

A sharp intake of breath from down the hall brought his head up. Alex stood there with a hand clamped over her mouth.

It took half a second for Cody to realize why. Again, the blood on his shirt.

Letting go of Kyra's hand, he leapt to his feet and strode toward his wife. “It's okay. It's not my blood. I'm fine.”

Relief flashed across Alex's face, though her eyes remained wide. “Then, whose...?”

“Gabe's. He got shot in the shoulder. They're working on him.”

Looking shaken, Alex nodded and then stepped forward to snake her arms around Cody's neck.
